De snelle ontwikkelingen op het gebied van digitale technologie gaan niet aan de psychologie voorbij. Dat geldt zowel voor de toepassing in de gezondheidszorg als voor de psychologie als wetenschap. Gerben Westerhof werpt vanuit de narratieve psychologie een licht op zowel de meer toegepaste kant van de e-mental health als op de meer fundamentele kant van de e-science. ‘Hoewel computers nieuwe mogelijkheden bieden, blijven andere mensen en psychologische professionals nodig om het verhaal van de persoon recht te doen en te begrijpen.’

Op het eerste gezicht lijken verhalen op gespannen voet te staan met technologie. Verhalen behoren tot het domein van waarden en cultuur. Zij worden gezien als subjectief en vooringenomen, maar ook als persoonlijk, authentiek en warm. Technologie behoort tot het rationele domein en wordt vaak gezien als objectief en neutraal, maar ook als onpersoonlijk, vervreemdend en koud.

De naam ‘Story Lab’, waarin we het verhalende onderzoek van de Universiteit Twente gebundeld hebben, draagt deze spanning in zich. ‘Story’ verwijst naar het verhalende en ‘Lab’ naar het interveniëren en onderzoeken met digitale middelen. Juist deze spanning biedt ruimte voor de verkenning van nieuwe mogelijkheden.

Ik ga eerst in op de kennis over de betekenis van autobiografische verhalen voor geestelijke gezondheid en welbevinden en op de toepassing van die kennis in de narratieve zorg. Daarna bespreek ik e-mental health en e-science aan de hand van voorbeelden. Ik sluit af met de implicaties voor de toekomst.
